I started eating at Levis's at 6th and Pine in the 1940's, as a pre-teen. I remember the store quite well, with the antique soda fountain near the window, through which some patrons were served. I remember the great bowls of free condiments and the ice-cream sodas. Later, the 50-year club plaque hanging in the store included the names of my father (Henry Switkay) and grandfather (William Weisman).

I hope the new store on York Road in Abington succeeds. I am planning to take my grandson there to introduce another generation.

First time I went to Levis my Aunt took us, this was 1963, I was 7 and I was hooked on the hot dogs and Champ cherry. I eat their over the years once or twice a year. Was working downtown for the Phila. Fire Dept and went back about 2 months after my last visit and found them closed, what a sad day. Then they were reopened but sadly only for a short while, how I have missed the hot dogs since then. But was glad to find Champ cheery at Famous Deli in the Northeast. Was glad to find this website, hope everyone has fond memories of the old Levis

As a kid growing up on Fabric Row in the late 60s, I still remember the handmade chocolate sodas served in real glasses and the hot dog/fishcake combos. Yum! :9

Glad to see Champ Cherry is still being made. I seek it out everytime I return to Philly...

Levis was sort of a early 60's thing for me. I had a Vespa scooter and my friends wuld drive down the East River Drive to South Street and we would stop at Levis which was one of the few places to eat in the area. My family was more of a Horn & Hardart and Linton's place. However in 1990 I looked into bottling the Champ Cherry and eventually purchased the entire business.
